Full Frame Documentary Film Festival

                “Full Frame serves the documentary form and its community by showcasing the contemporary work of established and emerging filmmakers. The festival provides a space that nurtures conversation between artists, students, and the Full Frame audience. Full Frame is committed to enhancing public understanding and appreciation of the art form and its significance, while making films more accessible to a wider audience.”

                Full Frame is one the top film festivals in the U.S for documentaries and with the close proximity to Wilmington, it would be easy and inexpensive for us to travel to Durham for the festival. A possible negative with this festival would be since it does focus solely on documentaries, the selection process will be tighter as opposed to a festival where only a portion of films would be documentary shorts. However, with how local this film is and how high profile it could be for our film, it seems to be worth the chance of submission.

Long Leaf Film Festival

                “As filmmakers and movie fans, you know how many outstanding films are being made and that they come from all over the world—not just Hollywood sound stages. We know that making films is making history and believe that the Longleaf Film Festival is a great fit for a museum, especially the North Carolina Museum of History, as a place that helps tell the stories that connect us all.”

                This is smaller festival in its second year and it focuses on historic and contemporary stories set in and about North Carolina. Our film is not an historical film on North Carolina, but it is a contemporary story about a unique location in North Carolina. Allen Walker’s background and story is ingrained in and shaped by the modern history of Wilmington, NC and Walker World is quickly becoming a popular word of mouth destination for parties, events and hanging out.

RIVERRUN International Film Festival

                “The RiverRun International Film Festival is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the role of cinema as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Our mission is to foster a greater appreciation of cinema and a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures and perspectives of our world through regular interaction with great films and filmmakers.”

                RiverRun is a premier film festival in Winston-Salem, NC. Since the setting of North Carolina is so much what our film is about, we think we can appeal to the local aspect of the festival. Allen Walker is very much a product of his surroundings and growing up in Wilmington, NC. The festival is also free submission to NC students, so it wouldn’t be a risk either way if we submit. RIVERRUN is also an Academy qualifying festival for Documentary Shorts which increases the exposure of the festival for documentary shorts which would in turn be increase exposure for our film.

Nashville Film Festival

                “NaFF amplifies our collective and individual awareness by bringing the world to Nashville to celebrate innovation, music and the many voices of the human spirit through the art of film.”

                The Nashville Film Festival is one of the bigger festivals on our list and we feel the artistic southern vibe that our film has will fit very well within the mood of this festival. It was ranked by MovieMaker magazine as one of the “25 film festivals worth the entry fee”, so it would be a value for a festival of this caliber for us to enter into the short documentary category. They emphasize music culture in the festival which we can appeal to with our film. Music is such is large part of Walker’s life, from the concerts that take place at Walker World or Walker himself playing piano.

Macon Film Festival

                “Surrounded by a rich musical and southern culture, the Macon Film Festival celebrates independent films while promoting filmmaking for entertainment, inspiration, education, and economic development.”

            The Macon Film Festival is a festival that focuses on independent films and the festival has a unique category for Southern Documentaries that can be on any subject matter as long as it is showcasing southern life. Our documentary is at its core about a unique southern art loving community gathering at an artist’s retreat called Walker World in Wilmington, NC and the life and background of the man who runs it, Allen Walker. Our documentary delves into how Walker was shaped by his upbringing in Wilmington as “one of the first downtown kids” to grow up in the town. Music is also an aspect of the film that would appeal to this festival. Impromptu piano playing by Walker as well as musical artists performing concerts on a regular basis can appeal to the “musical and southern culture” touted by the festivals description.
